Symbols, signs, icons and artifacts come together in new exhibition at I space

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Symbols, signs and other icons and artifacts of popular culture are being combined and reconfigured in a new exhibition on view Jan. 26 through Feb. 24 at I space, the Chicago gallery of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“Remix,” organized by UIUC alumni artists Kevin Kaempf and Lora Lode, features the work of artists Matti Allison, Brett Bloom, Stephanie Brooks, Jackie Chang, Marc Fischer, Carol Jackson, Guy Overfelt and Terre Thaemlitz.

Other participants in the exhibition include Freitag Lab.ag; the College of Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology; UIUC department of crop sciences; and Urban Farm Project/Monk Parakeet.

Diverse cultural and artistic practices — drawn from advertising, design, science and music — are brought together in the exhibition. The common thread among the works is their methodology: sampling and reconfiguring conceptual and visual fragments to construct hybrid forms.

For example, a banner, created by Chang and normally used to identify a location or business, becomes a work of art. Another example is Brooks’ blend of electronic gadgets and commonplace signs with discrete messages that measure and document emotions, feelings and desires.

A conversation with the artists, moderated by UIUC art and design professor Laurie Hogin, will take place at 2 p.m. Jan. 27. The discussion will be taped by Chicago Access Television, and will be broadcast during the showÕs run. An opening reception is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 26.

I space gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
