CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Several University of Illinois students have been recognized for outstanding leadership during the 2000-2001 academic year.
Student award-winners, and their awards are (EDITORS: See List.).
The award winners were selected through a campuswide nomination process organized by the UI Office of Student Affairs, and honored at a campus awards luncheon. All awards include a monetary prize.
Student Affairs also presented leadership awards to four student organizations. The T.I.S. Bookstore Outstanding Student Organization Awards were given to the Student Advancement Group for Education, I-Vote, the Arnold Air Society and the Midwest Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Ally College Conference 2001.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD RECIPIENTS
ALEDO Amy Sponsler, a junior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Sponsler received the Barbara Seaquist Williams Leadership Award, established in honor of the former treasurer of the U.S. Tennis Association, who was an active volunteer as a UI student in the late 1940s.
CHAMPAIGN Joannah Metz, a junior in the College of Engineering. Metz received the Joshua L. Grafton Award, created as a memorial to Grafton, a student leader who died in 1989.
CHICAGO (38) Homer Benavides, a senior in the College of Engineering. Benavides received the Jean F. Hill Award, established in honor of Hill, a former UI dean of students who was committed to students from underrepresented populations.
EDWARDSVILLE Mario Peraza, a senior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Peraza received the Joseph H. Smith Award, established by colleagues of Smith, a former UI English professor, assistant vice chancellor for
academic affairs and director of affirmative action who worked toward creating a culturally diverse campus climate that offered educational opportunities to all students.
GREENVILLE Sarah Cochrane, a senior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Cochrane received the Fred H. Turner Memorial Award, established in honor of the UIs first dean of students.
HICKORY HILLS Erin Krejci, a senior in the College of Liberal Arts
and Science. Krejci received the Fred H. Turner Memorial Award, established in
honor of the UIs first dean of students.
HILLSIDE Tiana Dunlap, a senior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Dunlap received the Jean F. Hill award, established in honor of Hill, a former UI dean of students who was committed to students from underrepresented populations, and the Chicago Illini Club Excellence in Leadership Award, which is funded through an endowment by the club, a regional affiliate of the UI Alumni Association.
LAKE FOREST Shauna Dick, a junior in the College of Communications. Dick received the Frances M. Redmon Award, which recognizes an exceptional female student from the Greek community who has demonstrated dedication to the performing arts.
LIBERTYVILLE Roi Kawai, a senior in the College of Education. Kawai received the Mothers Association Humanitarian Service Award, created to encourage and recognize student community service. A contribution also was made to Concerned Citizens for a Better Neighborhood, the organization of the recipients choice.
MANTENO Breanne Nelson, a junior in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. Nelson received the Barbara Seaquist Williams Leadership Award, established in honor of the former treasurer of the U.S. Tennis Association, who was an active volunteer as a UI student in the late 1940s.
NEWTON Roberta Volk, a senior in the College of Applied Life Studies. Volk received the Mothers Association Humanitarian Service Award, created to encourage and recognize student community service. A contribution also was made to C-U Special Recreation Program, the organization of the recipients choice.
NORTHBROOK Stephanie Sideman, a senior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Sideman received the Vicki Lynn Merkel Excellence in Leadership Award, created in memory of Merkel, a student leader and member
of the UI Class of 1987 who died during her senior year.
OSWEGO Judith Barocio, a sophomore in the College of Commerce and Business Administration. Barocio received the Joshua L. Grafton Award, created as a memorial to Grafton, a student leader who died in 1989.
PEARL CITY Michael Gunderson, a senior in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. Gunderson received the
Procter & Gamble Excellence in Leadership Award, created to support leadership opportunities at the UI.
SKOKIE Yuri Kim, a junior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Kim received the Irene Pierson Award, created in 1966 in honor of the first woman president of the UI Student Senate.
WHEATON Kathryn Miller, a junior in the College of Education. Miller received the Mothers Association Humanitarian Service Award, created to encourage and recognize student community service. A contribution also was made to Concerned Citizens for a Better Neighborhood, the organization of the recipients
choice.
OUT-OF-STATE
IOWA, Ankeny Christopher Degner, a senior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Degner received the Fred H. Turner Memorial Award, established in honor of the UIs first dean of students.
