CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Thomas J. Sargent, a professor of economics at Stanford University, will deliver the David Kinley Lecture in Economics at the University of Illinois March 7 (Thursday).
His lecture, “Flawed but Enduring: The Monetary System From 1200-1800: A Tale of Small Fixed Costs,” will start at 4 p.m. at 141 Wohlers Hall, 1206 S. Sixth St., Champaign.
Sargent will analyze the history of money and discuss why so many governments fail to put their knowledge about sound currency to work. The lecture is based on his latest book, “The Big Problem of Small Change,” co-written with Francois Velde.
A senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and an adviser and consultant to the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Sargent is one of the leaders in modern macroeconomics. He has been a fellow of the Econometric Society since 1976, and has written 11 books and more than 100 articles in the field.
The Kinley Lecture is sponsored by the UI department of economics and the College of Commerce and Business Administration. The lecture is free and open to the public.
