Schools visiting U. of I. to recruit teachers on annual placement day

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Schools in Brooklyn, Denver and Los Angeles, as well as Green Bay, Wis.; Green Cove Springs, Fla., and Palm Springs, Calif., will be among those looking for new teachers on Thursday (March 3) at the annual Teacher Placement Day at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Even the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, located in west Las Vegas, will be among about 140 school districts or schools represented at the recruiting event, held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Illini Union, 1401 W. Green St., Urbana.

Soon-to-be Illinois graduates, as well as veteran teachers, are invited to attend.

About 90 of the districts represented are from Illinois, with California, Florida, Georgia and North Carolina among the states with the largest number of districts sending recruiters.

Despite hard times in some places as a result of budget cuts, teaching jobs are plentiful in many locations, according to Mildred Trent, director of the university’s Educational Career Services Office, which organizes the event. The Chicago Public Schools will be hiring more than 2,000 new teachers for the coming school year; the school district that includes Las Vegas will need 1,500, and the Los Angeles school district will need more than 2,300.

For additional information about the event or the current job situation for teachers, contact Trent, or Davida Bluhm, at 333-0740. Additional information about the districts and schools participating is available at http://www.ed.uiuc.edu/ecso.
