Richard Levin, CEO of Coursera and president emeritus of Yale University, will present two upcoming lectures on the U. of I. campus.
“Preparing Undergraduates for Global Citizenship” will be 9-10:30 a.m. Nov. 13 in Room 126 of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science with a reception afterward. This is the second lecture in the campus series “Prioritizing Undergraduate Education at Illinois.”
The lecture and discussion series brings distinguished scholars and university leaders to campus to discuss the landscape of contemporary higher education, the nature of our public, land-grant mission, the aims of undergraduate eduation, and strategies for achieving these goals in today’s comprehensive research universities.
The next speaker in the series will be Carolyn Dever, provost of Dartmouth College, on Dec. 2.
Levin also will deliver the College of Business Centennial Lecture at 2 p.m. Nov. 13, titled “Your Professional Success: What Students, Faculty and Staff Need to Know in the Era of Online Education.” The lecture will be in the Deloitte Auditorium at the Business Instructional Facility, and a reception will follow in the facility’s commons. Joining the discussion will be President Emeritus B. Joseph White; Madhu Viswanathan, professor of business administration and the Diane and Steven N. Miller Centennial Chair; Aric Rindfleisch, professor and head of business administration, and the John M. Jones Professor of Marketing; and Raj Echambadi, senior associate dean of the MBA Programs, Strategic Innovation and Professor of Business Administration and James F. Towey Faculty Fellow.
Levin is one of the best authorities on the changing dynamic of online education, particularly in the growing field of massive open online learning. During his talk, in honor of the college’s centennial anniversary, he will discuss how online learning is revolutionizing higher education.
As president at Yale, Levin leads initiatives in open knowledge sharing, online education and sustainability, as well as strengthening international ties and areas of study such as science, engineering and medicine. He is a trustee of the Hewlett Foundation and a director of American Express and C3 Energy.
