Gov. Pat Quinn announced five more appointments to the UI Board of Trustees on Sept. 4, filling the remaining vacancies on the university’s board in preparation for its Sept. 10 meeting in Urbana.
The new appointees, all UI alumni, joined two prior appointees, Christopher G. Kennedy and Lawrence G. Oliver II, whose appointments Quinn announced on Aug. 26. In addition, Frances G. Carroll and James Montgomery remain on the board after refusing to step down.
The five new appointees:
Karen Hasara served as mayor of Springfield, Ill., from 1995 to 2003 and is a trustee of the Springfield Mass Transit District. Hasara’s resume also includes service as a state senator (1993-1995) in the 50th District, a state representative in the 100th district (1986-1993) and as Seventh Judicial Circuit Clerk of Sangamon County (1980-1986). Hasara earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and elementary education and a master’s degree in legal studies from the UI at Springfield. She and her husband, Jerry Gott, reside in Springfield.
Timothy N. Koritz is a staff anesthesiologist at Rockford Memorial Hospital and a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the UI College of Medicine at Rockford. As a major in the U.S. Air Force, Koritz served as flight surgeon for the 7th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico and was Officer in Charge of the Space Shuttle Emergency Medical Response Team (1988-1991). The fourth generation of his family to attend Illinois, Koritz earned a bachelor’s degree at Illinois, a doctor of philosophy degree in immunology from the University of Cambridge, England, and a medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He resides in Roscoe with his wife, Julie, and four daughters.
Pamela B. Strobel is former executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Exelon Corp. (1993-2005). Strobel’s professional memberships include serving as a trustee of Rush University Medical Center, a member of the board of Chicago Chamber of Commerce and as a trustee of the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. She has been honored as one of Crain’s Chicago Business “100 Most Influential Women” (2004) and was named a Distinguished Alumnus of the UI in 1996. Strobel earned a bachelor of science degree in journalism and a juris doctorate from the UI. She resides in Winnetka with her husband, Russ.
Edward L. McMillan, who was first appointed in May, was reappointed to the board. His term expires in 2015. McMillan is principal and CEO of McMillan L.L.C., M and A Transaction Consultants. McMillan served on the board of directors of the UI Alumni Association (1995-2008) and was its chair from 2003-2006, when he also served on the board of directors of the UI Foundation. A resident of Greenville, he earned a bachelor of science degree in agriculture from the UI.
Carlos E. Tortolero is founder and president of the National Museum of Mexican Art, a position he has held since 1982. Prior to that, Tortolero was a teacher, counselor and administrator in the Chicago Public Schools. He has served as president of Museums in the Parks, was a panelist of the National Endowment for the Arts and was a guest faculty member of the Smithsonian Institute’s Museum Awards Leadership Program. Tortolero earned a bachelor of arts degree in secondary education and history from the UI at Chicago and a master of arts degree in bilingual education supervision from Chicago State University. He and his wife, Maria, reside in Berwyn.
