Public forums on anthrax scheduled for next week

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Four public forums about anthrax will be held on the University of Illinois campus next week.

The meetings will be open to the campus and local community.

Experts will talk about the anthrax bacterium, the risk factors associated with developing anthrax disease, measures that can be taken to prevent the disease, treatment options and handling mail. The experts also will take questions from the audience.

The panelists: Abigail Salyers, a professor of microbiology and the president of the American Society for Microbiology; Brenda Wilson, a professor of microbiology and expert on anthrax and anthrax toxins; Dr. Robert Palinkas, the director of McKinley Health Center; Van Anderson, associate vice chancellor for administration and human resources; Capt. Krystal Fitzpatrick, the head of the investigations section of the UI Police Department; and Lt. Jeff Christensen of the UI Police Department.

The first meeting will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 6) in the recital room of Smith Hall, 805 S. Mathews Ave., Urbana. The second meeting will take place that night, from 7 to 9 in the auditorium of the Music Building, 1114 W. Nevada St., Urbana; enter through the north door on Oregon Street.

The third meeting will take place Thursday (Nov. 8) from 10 a.m. to noon in the Smith Hall recital room. The fourth meeting will be from 1 to 3 that afternoon in Room 274 Medical Sciences Building, 506 S. Mathews Ave., Urbana.
