Psychologist to present Beckman’s SmithGroup Distinguished Lecture April 15

Michael Posner, a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Oregon and an adjunct professor at Weill Medical College, will present the 2016 SmithGroup Distinguished Lecture at noon April 15 in the auditorium of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. His talk is titled “Mechanisms of Brain Network and Brain State Training.”

For more than 50 years, Posner has studied how mental operations, particularly those related to attention, are carried out by neural networks. He has used cognitive, imaging and genetic methods. His current work examines the mechanisms of changes in white matter resulting from various forms of training.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign professor Christopher Burcham has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering this year. Burcham, a professor of the practice in the department of chemical and biomolecular engineering, joined the university last fall.
