UI students set two Guinness World Records two days apart in August

Following the annual New Student Convocation on Aug. 24, 3,463 freshman and transfer students broke the world record for the greatest number of people simultaneously husking corn. UI students smashed the old record of 351 people set in 2011. Afterward, the corn was served during dinner at University Housing dining halls.

“This world record attempt drew on the university’s agricultural heritage – supersweet corn was invented here,” said Kirsten Ruby, an assistant director of University Housing. “Setting a world record is a great way to kick off a student’s career at the university. The Class of 2016 can remember this always.”

Two days later, the UI, partnering with the nonprofit Gift of Hope Organ and Tissue Donor Network, broke the world record for registering the most people as organ donors during eight hours in a single day. During the Illini Union’s annual Quad Day event, during which students can explore how to get involved at the UI, 2,262 members of the campus community registered to become organ donors, easily outnumbering the old record of 765 people.

“This event made a difference nationwide, said Robyn Deterding, the director of UI’s Campus Recreation and a promoter of organ donation. “We showed others that those at the University of Illinois believe and are committed to transforming lives.”

New cloud storage for data

Beginning this fall a new and improved file-sharing and file-backup service called U of I Box was made available to students. The old system, Netfiles, will be retired Dec. 21. Faculty and staff members began using the new system over the summer.

Beyond mere data storage, U of I Box – an industry leader that serves many Fortune 500 companies – will enable users the mobility and space, as well as the functionality, to collaborate with their colleagues in ways that were not possible before. U of I Box provides:

• 5 gigabytes for students (15 gigabytes for faculty and staff members) – far more than eDocs, Webdisks or Netfiles
• Secure, legal storage and access of confidential data
• Mobile security that is on par with desktop security
• The ability to share files with other campus users or with people from other institutions, companies or the general public
• The ability to share files through online course-management systems such as Blackboard and IllinoisCompass 2g
• The ability to create dropboxes into which students can turn in their assignments without violating each other’s confidentiality
• The ability to upload, download and stream audio or video using Box’s integrated media players

How are migrating wild birds affected by H5N1 infection in the U.S.?

Each spring, roughly 3.5 billion wild birds migrate from their warm winter havens to their breeding grounds across North America, eating insects, distributing plant seeds and providing a variety of other ecosystem services to stopping sites along the way. Some also carry diseases like avian influenza, a worry for agricultural, environmental and public health authorities. […]

Dating is not broken, but the trajectories of relationships have changed

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — According to some popular culture writers and online posts by discouraged singles lamenting their inability to find romantic partners, dating is “broken,” fractured by the social isolation created by technology, pandemic lockdowns and potential partners’ unrealistic expectations. Yet two studies of college students conducted a decade apart found that their ideas about […]
