October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

To increase awareness of domestic violence and its consequences, the University of Illinois’ Women’s Resources Center and Courage Connection, along with other campus and community organizations, will host activities and events throughout October.

It is estimated that one in three women and one in four men in the U.S. have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. However, domestic violence can also include psychological, emotional, financial and sexual abuse. Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an opportunity to shine a light on the issue of abuse in our community, share resources, remind survivors that they deserve safe and healthy relationships and continue building a community where violence is not tolerated.

The first event is Peace Jam! Music for a World Without Violence! on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event features live music, performances, art and a resource fair. The event is open to all ages and will be held at Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana.

Chicago-based sportscaster Julie DiCaro will give a discussion-based presentation Tuesday, Oct. 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. in room 112 of Gregory Hall, 810 S. Wright St., Urbana. The event is free and open to the public. With a background in domestic violence law, DiCaro speaks against gender-based violence perpetrated by professionals in her industry.

The final event is a candlelight vigil honoring survivors and mourning those killed by domestic violence. The vigil will take place at the Alma Mater Plaza, located at the corner of Green and Wright streets in Urbana, on Thursday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m.
