CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — People who want to learn more about law enforcement have the opportunity to do so as participants in the Champaign County Citizen Police Academy, which now is accepting applications for enrollment.

The academy’s 15th session will take place Aug. 30 through Nov. 30, on Thursdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the University of Illinois Police Training Institute, 1004 S. Fourth St., Champaign.

Participants will explore topics such as crime prevention, community-based policing, gangs, the DARE program, DUI enforcement and firearms safety. Part of the course includes tours of the county jail and METCAD facilities, and a ride-along with a local police officer.

The academy began in the fall of 1974 and has been held in the spring and fall of each year since then.

To apply for enrollment or for more information, call Lois Welling at the institute, 244-9589.
