Fourteen UI students have been awarded scholarships to study abroad

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Fourteen University of Illinois students have been awarded scholarships to help them study abroad during the summer and the next academic year.

The recipients and their scholarships: (EDITIORS: See list.).

According to the Institute of International Education, 115,000 students will study abroad during the 2000-01 academic year. In 1998-99, 9.3 percent of graduating seniors had studied abroad, according to the institute.

Study Abroad Scholarships and the Recipients

CHARLESTON -- Shannon Buckley-Shaklee, 2505 Kari Knoll, senior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, International Programs and Studies Study Abroad Scholarship and the Chad Lobdell Memorial Scholarship for the academic year at the University of Nottingham in England.

DARIEN -- Georgie Joven, 6701 Dicosola Court, senior in the College of Applied Life Studies, International Programs and Studies Study Abroad Scholarship for the summer in the Dominican Republic.

LAKE FOREST -- Jacob Simms, 653 St. George Court, sophomore in the College of Commerce and Business Administration, International Programs and Studies Study Abroad Scholarship for the fall semester in Australia.

LA PRAIRIE -- Erin Marlow, R.R. 1, sophomore in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, National Security Education Program undergraduate scholarship for study in Argentina this summer and Brazil during the fall semester.

LEMONT -- Lisa Ann Smith, 101 W. Timberline Drive, senior in the College of Communications, Chad Lobdell Memorial Scholarship for the fall semester at the University of East Anglia in England.

MCHENRY -- Kelly Folliard, 1502 Appaloosa Trail, sophomore in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, International Programs and Studies Study Abroad Scholarship for the academic year in France.

OAK LAWN -- Colleen Morrissey, 10115 S. Cook, sophomore in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, International Programs and Studies Study Abroad Scholarship for the fall semester in Australia.

STREAMWOOD -- Mona Thakkar, 10 McKinley Lane, sophomore in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, International Programs and Studies Study Abroad Scholarship for the summer in Spain.

SYCAMORE -- Jennifer A. Murphy, 1620 Bayberry Lane, sophomore in the College of Applied Life Studies, International Programs and Studies Study Abroad Scholarship and Institute of International Education 2000 Midwest Regional Center Study Abroad Scholarship for the academic year in Kenya.

WHEELING -- James Jay, 1160 Honeysuckle Drive, junior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, International Programs and Studies Study Abroad Scholarship for the academic year in Great Britain.

WILMETTE -- Angela Chiu, 219 Kilpatrick, senior in the College of Commerce and Business Administration, International Programs and Studies Study Abroad Scholarship and the Mitsui USA Study Abroad Scholarship for the academic year in Hong Kong.

OHIO, Xenia -- Kathleen Pirog, 1220 Sugar Hill Lane, junior in the College of Engineering, International Programs and Studies Study Abroad Scholarship and Institute of Education Program 2000 Midwest Regional Center Study Abroad Scholarship for study in Perth, Australia, during the summer and fall semester.

WISCONSIN, Eau Claire -- Gregory Diethrich, 2250 Skeels Ave., graduate student in ethnomusicology, National Security Education Program graduate fellowship for study and research in Trinidad and Tobago for a year beginning in July.

TAIWAN, Taipei -- Karen Sun, 12F #47, Jen Ai Road, Section 1, senior in the College of Commerce and Business Administration, Mitsui USA Study Abroad Scholarship for the fall semester at Senshu University Exchange in Japan.
