New ideas in architecture to be featured at I space

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Architects will have the floor in January at I space, the Chicago gallery of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Two shows focusing on new ideas in architecture open at the gallery:

o “Make No Little Plans: Designing the Chicago Lakefront in an Immersive Virtual Reality Environment,” Jan. 2-25. The exhibition will feature drawings and 3-D models for a project created by students in Illinois architecture professor Joy Monice Malnar’s graduate studio. The student-generated designs – created with the aid of immersive VR technology – are being presented to begin a discussion of how the northern Chicago Lakefront could be redesigned. From Jan. 2-10, gallery visitors will be able to sketch their own ideas using the Visbox and ShadowLight-Mirage tools used by the students.

o “Chicago Architectural Club: Members Exhibition,” Jan. 10-25. The theme of this year’s annual exhibition by club members is designing for under-utilized spaces in Chicago. Works on view will include sketches, drawings and photographs.

An opening reception for both exhibitions is scheduled to take place from 5-7 p.m. Jan. 25 at the gallery.

I space gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
