New head of labor education program named

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Edward Hertenstein has been named head of the labor education program at the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Hertenstein, 49, will oversee classes and conferences held for labor union leaders and others in the state. “I am extremely pleased to appoint Ed as head of the program,” said Peter Feuille, director of ILIR. “He did an excellent job as interim head of the program, and his impressive array of administrative, teaching and research skills make him a natural for this position. We are very fortunate to have a person of Ed’s caliber at the helm of our labor extension operation.”

A native of Rantoul, Ill., Hertenstein has had 20 years of experience in leadership positions in the Graphic Communications International Union while working as a press operator for the Courier, which was formerly published in Urbana, and the Elkhart Truth, published in Indiana.

Hertenstein earned a bachelor’s degree in labor studies at Indiana University in South Bend and a doctorate in labor and industrial relations at Illinois in 1999.

Since joining the ILIR faculty in 2000, he has been involved in developing the use of computer applications for labor unions, including computer simulation of contract negotiations. He has published articles on labor arbitration, distance learning for labor leaders and training program design.

He replaces Ron Peters, who retired as head of the labor program.
