Research interests: Her research interests include substance abuse, the criminal justice system, HIV and HCV risk behaviors, health disparities, urban poverty, international social work, mixed methodologies and community-based participatory research.
“Given our mission to strengthen vulnerable populations, we are pleased to have Dr. Liliane Windsor on our faculty,” said Wynne Korr, the dean of the School of Social Work. “She is a health disparities researcher who designs and implements community-supported interventions to reduce substance use frequency and HIV-HCV risk behaviors among residents in distressed communities who have experienced substance abuse and incarceration. As part of this research, she worked to create the Newark Community Collaborative Board in Newark, New Jersey, which implemented an innovative, multilevel intervention called Community Wise, based on empowerment theory and community mobilization practices. She has been successfully doing research with this population in Newark since 2009. Her previous research focused on social justice studies in Texas, Brazil and New York.”
Why Illinois? “I chose to come to the School of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for several reasons,” Windsor said. “The U. of I. is an outstanding organization that offers a variety of interdisciplinary opportunities. I was impressed with the infrastructure for grant development and faculty support at the School of Social Work. Dean Korr has an outstanding national reputation and the faculty are collaborative and collegial.
“I was born and raised in Brazil. The Lemann Institute for Brazilian Studies offers unique opportunities and resources that will enable me to develop a strong international program of research in the field of substance abuse and community organizing in Brazil. Finally, I was impressed with the professionalism and commitment to social work demonstrated by the students with whom I met during my campus visit. I am excited to join such a rich, dynamic and supportive environment.”
