Musicians evoke Kyoto train station in telematic concert

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Bass clarinetist Gene Coleman and Ensemble N_JP will perform Coleman’s composition “Kyoto_Naigai” with a film directed by Coleman Thursday (Dec. 8) at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. The performance, which is free and open to the public, can be viewed live in Krannert’s dance rehearsal space at 8 p.m., or online by emailing ijpanproject@illinois.edu with “Gene Coleman” in the subject line and your name and contact information in the body of the message.

Coleman is the founder and director of Soundfield, a not-for-profit organization that promotes art as a means for global understanding. He based “Kyoto_Naigai” on the structure of the train station in Kyoto, Japan. U. of I. faculty members Erik Lund, trombone, and Michael Cameron, contrabass, will join the ensemble in the performance.

Bamboo flute artist Akikazu Nakamura will perform telematically, live from Tokyo, and N_JP members will play traditional Japanese music on the sho (a reed instrument) and the koto (a zither-like stringed instrument).

The event is sponsored by the Illinois Japan Performing Arts Network, funded by the Japan Foundation’s Center for Global Partnership.
