CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Robin Kaler, the associate chancellor for public affairs, is the winner of the 2008 Medallion of Honor Award, the most prestigious annual award given by the Moms Association at the University of Illinois.

Kaler will be presented the award at the Moms Weekend kick-off dinner April 11.

Since 1977, the medallion has been given to a woman affiliated in some way with the U. of I. Nominations are solicited from deans, directors and departments on campus.

“Robin cheerfully shares her remarkable knowledge and skills,” wrote nominator Cynthia Ashwill, the director of advancement, communication and marketing for the U. of I. Library. “She is committed to helping others achieve their full potential.”

Another supporter added: “We could not have a better advocate for education or ambassador for the university. She truly understands the complexities of a major research institution and is able to articulate our work.”

Kaler received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in broadcast journalism, and an executive MBA from Illinois. She began teaching as an adjunct lecturer in 1989 for the journalism department. She later was hired as a speechwriter for the chancellor and other cabinet members and was appointed director of special projects in 1998, before serving as assistant chancellor for public affairs.

In addition to her work at the university, Kaler is a board member of the Champaign County Court Appointed Special Advocate program. She is a former chair of the steering committee for Rantoul Habitat for Humanity; a former member of the Rantoul Village Board of Trustees; and a former board member of the Developmental Services Center and of Champaign County Crimestoppers.

The Moms Association, established in 1923, is believed to be one of the nation’s longest-serving parent organizations. The association supports programs, services and activities that promote the health, safety and well-being of the university community and serves as the parent liaison to the campus.
