Media advisory: Holonyak memorial service open to news media

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — A celebration this week of the extraordinary accomplishments and life of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign professor emeritus Nick Holonyak Jr. will be open to the news media. The event takes place Thursday, Feb. 9, at 4:30 p.m. in the Grainger Auditorium and Lobby of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Building, 306 N. Wright St., Urbana. Auditorium doors will open at 4 p.m.

The service is invitation-only for the university community. Presenters will include Chancellor Robert J. Jones; Rashid Bashir, the dean of The Grainger College of Engineering; and Minjoo Lawrence Lee, the director of the Holonyak Micro & Nanotechnology Laboratory.

A renowned innovator of illumination, Holonyak died Sept. 18 in Urbana at age 93. He is credited with the development of the first practical visible-spectrum LED, now commonly used worldwide in light bulbs, device displays and lasers.
