Leading translator of Hebrew literature to lecture at Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Award-winning translator Dalya Bilu will deliver a lecture titled “Women’s Writing in Israel” on April 19 at the Levis Faculty Center on the University of Illinois campus.

The leading translator of Hebrew literature into English, Bilu has garnered acclaim for her work, including the Israel Culture and Education Ministry Prize for Translation and the 2010 Best Translated Book Award for Fiction from the Three Percent at the University of Rochester for her translation of Israeli author Gail Hareven’s love story “The Confessions of Noa Webber” (Melville House, 2009).

Also among Bilu’s celebrated translations are Aharon Appelfeld’s “Badenheim” (D.R. Godine, 1980) and “The Age of Wonders” (D.R. Godine, 1982), Judith Katzir’s “Dearest Anne: A Tale of Impossible Love” (Feminist Press at City University of New York, 2008), and the upcoming mystery “Cut Throat Dog,” by Joshua Sobol (Melville House), which is to be published in October.

Bilu will speak at 8 p.m. in the Music Room at Levis Faculty Center, 919 W. Illinois St., Urbana.

The lecture, free and open to the public, is being sponsored by the Program in Jewish Culture and Society.
