Krannert Art Museum to open faculty exhibition Jan. 26; launch noontime lectures Jan. 30

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. The diverse talents of faculty artists at the University of Illinois will be showcased in the annual School of Art and Design Faculty Art Exhibition Jan. 26 through Feb. 24 at the Krannert Art Museum.

One of the oldest annual faculty exhibitions in the country, the show includes the latest work by painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers, designers, as well as artists working with glass, computers and mixed media. The shows opening reception, from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 26, is free and open to the public.

“Seduction of Paint: Jerry Savage Painting, 1995-2001” also opens Jan. 26, and is on view through March 17. In this body of work, Savage returns to the charged imagery of his earlier career, presenting intensely private visions fueled by sweeping brush strokes and vivid colors.

A third new exhibition, “Featured Works: Authenticity,” opens Feb. 1 and runs through March 10. The exhibition draws on the knowledge of guest curators David OBrien, UI professor of art history, and Sarah Wisseman, director of the UIs Program on Ancient Technologies and Archaeological Materials. The exhibition explores questions involving attribution and authenticity of two prominent works from the museums permanent collection.

Coinciding with the exhibition are two lectures. Wisseman will present “Science in Krannert Art Museum” at noon on Feb. 19 in Room 4269 of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, 405 N. Mathews Ave., Urbana. In her talk, Wisseman will illustrate how modern instrumental techniques can be used to investigate the technology and authenticity of ancient objects. OBrien will give a gallery talk at the museum at 5:30 p.m. on March 6.

Other activities at the museum this winter include a new Wednesday noontime lecture series called Midweek ArtSpeak. The talks, on topics planned to correspond with current exhibitions, will be presented by UI faculty, museum staff members and docents, and graduate students. Presentations and speakers include:

How are migrating wild birds affected by H5N1 infection in the U.S.?

Each spring, roughly 3.5 billion wild birds migrate from their warm winter havens to their breeding grounds across North America, eating insects, distributing plant seeds and providing a variety of other ecosystem services to stopping sites along the way. Some also carry diseases like avian influenza, a worry for agricultural, environmental and public health authorities. […]

Dating is not broken, but the trajectories of relationships have changed

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — According to some popular culture writers and online posts by discouraged singles lamenting their inability to find romantic partners, dating is “broken,” fractured by the social isolation created by technology, pandemic lockdowns and potential partners’ unrealistic expectations. Yet two studies of college students conducted a decade apart found that their ideas about […]
