Jupiter String Quartet to present Bartók’s string quartets in three concerts, venues

The Jupiter String Quartet performs a series of three concerts this week that will feature the six string quartets by Hungarian composer Béla Bartók. The string quartets are among Bartók’s greatest works and among the greatest in the genre.

The Jupiter String Quartet, the University of Illinois quartet-in-residence, will perform them over three nights – Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. They chose three different venues to encourage attendance by a wide range of people. Each concert will include a discussion led by professors from the School of Music.

On Nov. 4, the quartet will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Smith Hall. The discussion following the performance will be led by musicologist William Kinderman.

The quartet will perform at 2 p.m. Nov. 7 at Krannert Art Museum, with the discussion led by composition professor Stephen Taylor.

They will perform at 2 p.m. Nov. 8 at Spurlock Museum, with the discussion led by musicologist Donna Buchanan.
