Japan House event to include flower-arranging demonstrations

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Demonstrations of Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, will be among the activities celebrating Japanese culture that will be held during the annual Spring Open House at Japan House, 2000 S. Lincoln Avenue, Urbana.

Affiliated with the College of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Illinois, Japan House is a teaching facility that focuses on Japanese arts.

The open house, to be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 17, will include tea ceremonies throughout the day. James Bier, the designer of the Japan House gardens, will host garden tours at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The Illinois Prairie Ikenobo Ikebana Chapter of Urbana-Champaign will perform the flower-arranging demonstrations at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and visitors will have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets to win the arrangements.

All events will be free and open to the public.
