The School of Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics will offer a unique learning opportunity in the form of its Intensive Foreign Language Instruction Program for winter 2016.
Courses will be held weekdays for two weeks from Jan. 4-15 for three hours a day. The courses are taught by advanced graduate students or faculty members at the U. of I.
Courses focus on conversational skills, travel preparation and language survival skills. There is minimal homework, no attendance policy and no academic credit.
Participants can place themselves in the appropriate level course based on the following guidelines:
- Elementary is for those with no prior experience or formal training in the language.
- Intermediate is for those with the equivalent of one year of college-level instruction in the language.
- Advanced is for those with the equivalent of two or more years of college-level instruction in the language.
Registration by Dec. 14 is encouraged. Course offerings with fewer than 10 participants as of that date are subject to cancellation. Registration fees will be refunded in full for classes canceled because of limited enrollment.
Except as noted below, classes will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Instruction will be offered in: elementary French, intermediate French, elementary German, elementary Italian, intermediate Italian, elementary Portuguese, intermediate Portuguese (5-8 p.m.), elementary Russian, elementary Spanish (9 a.m.-noon and 5-8 p.m.), intermediate Spanish and advanced Spanish.
The cost for U. of I. students is $100; for U. of I. faculty, staff and retirees, $125; and for the public, $150. Payments must be made at the time of online registration.
Cancellations after Dec. 18 will be assessed a $25 fee. There will be no refunds after the first day of class (Jan. 4).
