Illinois chemistry professor Ryan C. Bailey named Sloan Fellow

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – University of Illinois chemistry professor Ryan C. Bailey has been selected to receive a 2011 Sloan Research Fellowship from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Bailey is one of 118 early career scientists and researchers from 54 colleges and universities chosen for a two-year fellowship. In keeping with its goal of recognizing potential groundbreaking researchers in their respective fields, the Sloan fellowship program awards fellows $50,000 to pursue their choice of research topics and allows them flexibility in applying funds toward their research.

Bailey’s research interests lie at the interface of bioanalytical and biomaterials chemistry. His group is developing chip-integrated arrays of photonic sensors to detect signatures of diseases at their earliest stages and then help clinicians choose the best course of personalized treatment. Bailey’s group also is developing dynamic and instructive biomaterials that have applications in areas such as regenerative medicine, inflammation, and cancer biology.

Bailey earned his doctorate in chemistry from Northwestern University in 2004 and joined the faculty at Illinois in 2006. He also is affiliated with the department of bioengineering, Institute for Genomic Biology, and Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory at Illinois.

“The scientists and researchers selected for this year’s Sloan Research Fellowships represent the very brightest rising stars of this generation of scholars,” said Paul L. Joskow, the president of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. “The Foundation is proud to be able to support their work at this important stage in their careers.”

Sloan Research Fellowships have been awarded since 1955.
