Illinois acceptance numbers reflect strong in-state interest, diversity gains

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. —The number of first-year students expected to report to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus for the upcoming fall semester is similar to the fall 2015 total.

“We feel confident we will make our target of approximately 7,500 freshmen students in the fall, assuming the MAP grant program is adequately funded by the state Legislature,” said Charles Tucker, vice provost for undergraduate education. “Illinois remains a sought-after destination, as evidenced by the record number of applications of more than 38,000.”

While the deadline for admitted students to accept their admission passed on May 1, the university refrains from releasing detailed information about its incoming class until after the 10th day of the fall semester, which begins Aug. 22. Last year, the 10-day enrollment number stood at 7,565.

“We continue to see strong interest from within the state, with increased acceptances from Illinois residents for the second year in a row,” Tucker said. “We are also pleased to see increased diversity across campus, with significant gains in African-American and Hispanic students accepting their offers of admission for the second year in a row.”

Tucker said the acceptances by international students followed a larger national trend of modest declines, which appears to be a reflection of recent weakness in the economy of China.

“We’re continuing to monitor developments with international students,” he said.
