The UI at Urbana-Champaign was ranked second in the Midwest for quality education at a low price in Money magazine's annual "best buys" among four-year undergraduate colleges.
The ranking, based on the cost and academic quality of 1,110 U.S. colleges, was released Aug. 14 in New York and is part of the magazine's September issue.
In overall rankings of "elite values in college education today," the UI placed 18th in the nation, by far the highest ranking for an Illinois school. Other state colleges listed in the top 100 were Illinois College (63), Wheaton College (71) and Northwestern University (82).
The UI was the best-ranked school in the Big Ten, followed by University of Iowa (48), Pennsylvania State University (52) and University of Wisconsin (55).
Truman State University in Missouri was ranked No. 1 in the Midwest.
