Deaths

INSIDE ILLINOIS, Sept. 15, 2011        [ Email | Share ]

Hassan Aref, 60, died Sept. 9. Aref was the head of the department of theoretical and applied mechanics at the UI from 1992-2003. Memorials: Details on a memorial fund will be announced.

Penny Norfleet Carpenter, 52, died Sept. 10 at her home in Monticello. Carpenter had worked at the UI since 1978. She was an office support associate in the Library Human Resources Office. Memorials: Education fund for her daughter, Ellie, c/o First State Bank of Monticello or First State Bank of Champaign.

David Yarrow Curtin, 91, died July 31. He retired from the UI in 1988 after serving as a professor of chemistry for 37 years. He continued to work on campus for the next 18 years.

Margaret I. Douglas-Jones, 75, died Aug. 27. She worked as a kitchen helper in Housing for more than 20 years, retiring in 1994.

Ernest H. McClurg, 65, died Sept. 9 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. McClurg worked at the UI as a building service worker for Facilities and Services for 19 years, retiring in 2008. Memorials: Prairieland Council of the Boy Scouts, www.prairielandsbsa.org.

Memorial service

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 13 at Levis Faculty Center to honor David Lazarus. Lazarus, 90, died Sept. 8 at his Urbana home. He was a professor emeritus of physics. He taught at the UI for 37 years, retiring in 1987. Memorials: Sinfonia da Camera, 909 W. Oregon St., Urbana, IL 61801.
