Graduate school rankings released

A number of UI units ranked highly in the 2008 edition of “America’s Best Graduate Schools,” published in the April 9 edition of U.S.News & World Report.

The Graduate Program in Library and Information Science was ranked No. 1 in the nation, as were two specialties within the program: digital librarianship, and services for children and youth specialties. Other library specialties that garnered top ratings: health librarianship (8) and law librarianship (5).

The College of Business was ranked No. 37. Within the college, the accounting program was ranked fourth.

The College of Education was ranked 25th, and within the college, six units were ranked in the top 10: curriculum/instruction (5), educational psychology (7), elementary education (10), secondary education (8), special education (8), vocational/technical (5).

The College of Engineering was ranked No. 5 nationally; units within the college also were highly ranked: aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical (8), chemical (10), civil (2), computer (4), electrical (4), environmental (2), materials (2), mechanical (6), nuclear (9).

In the health disciplines, the magazine (in 2004) ranked audiology No. 20, clinical psychology No. 8, social work No. 19, speech-language pathology No. 10.
The College of Law ranked 25th.

The magazine ranked the UI No. 29 among doctoral programs in the sciences, with chemistry ranked No. 7, and specialties within chemistry as follows: analytical (3), inorganic (6), organic (7), physical (6) and theoretical (8).

Computer science, ranked in 2006, was rated No. 5. Within the program, artificial intelligence was ranked No. 8, programming language No. 8 and systems No. 5.

The mathematics program, ranked in 2006, was ranked No. 17, with these specialties also ranked: algebra/number theory/algebraic geometry (10), discrete mathematics and combinations (9), logic (3).

Physics, ranked in 2006, received a No. 8 ranking; condensed matter physics was rated No. 1, nuclear No. 10, quantum No. 10.

The UI English program, rated in 2005, was ranked No. 19. History (rated in 2005) was ranked No. 22, political science, also rated in 2005, was ranked No. 22.

Psychology, ranked in 2005, was ranked No. 5, with five specialties also highly rated: cognitive (6), developmental (8), experimental (4), industrial and organizational (5), social (10).

The master of fine arts program at the UI, based on a 2003 survey, was ranked No. 21, with graphic design ranked No. 7.
