Gov. Ryan to discuss death penalty

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois Gov. George H. Ryan is scheduled to speak Thursday (Dec. 19) at the University of Illinois College of Law about the role of the state’s chief executive in administering the death penalty.

His talk will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Max L. Rowe Auditorium of the Law Building, 504 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Champaign.

“Gov. Ryan has focused national debate on the scope and limits of executive power in policing the administration of this ultimate sanction,” said Heidi M. Hurd, the dean of the law school. “In recognition of the significance of the role of the state in defining this issue, the governor will discuss the death penalty at our law school.”

Ryan was invited to the college by Margareth Etienne, a professor of law at Illinois. Ryan will take questions from students after his talk.

News media parking will be available in the concrete courtyard next to the Law Building entrance in the 500 block of East Peabody Drive. Additional parking will be available at meters on Peabody Drive and Pennsylvania Avenue.
