Free screening of film on public higher education

A new documentary film, “Starving the Beast,” will be shown in a free screening Thursday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the Art Theater Co-op, 126 W. Church St., Champaign.

The film attempts to address why public higher education has been a topic of political debate and how these debates have affected American public universities. It seeks to explain 35 years of systematic defunding of higher education and a well-financed, market-oriented reform effort.

The screening is sponsored by the Campus Faculty Association, the American Association of University Professors (Urbana campus chapter) and the Graduate Employees Organization. A panel discussion featuring Karen Olowu, Chris Higgins and David O’Brien will follow the screening.
