Four undergraduates to receive Goldwater Scholarships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Four students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will receive the Goldwater Scholarship, which is awarded to undergraduate students who excel in the study of mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering.

This years scholarship recipients are Randall Cooper, 111 Harbour Terrace, Elmhurst, Ill.; Christopher Michael, 874 Sugar Hill Drive, Manchester, Mo.; David Smyth, 805 S. Coler Ave., Urbana, Ill.; and Stephanie Valerio, 443 N. Winston Drive, Palatine, Ill.

Cooper, a triple major, in astronomy, mathematics and physics, intends to earn a doctorate in theoretical astrophysics.

Michael, who is completing a degree in physics and a degree in materials science and engineering, intends to earn a doctorate in applied physics.

Smyth, a double major in mathematics and physics, intends to earn a doctorate in the study of probability and analysis, applications to physics, and social science.

Valerio, a student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, intends to earn a doctorate in inorganic chemistry.

The trustees of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awarded 309 scholarships for the 2002-2003 academic year to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and, considered as a single entity, Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,155 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.

The one- and two-year scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.
