CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The University of Illinois department of material sciences and engineering will award the first Kevin Moore Memorial Scholarship to Lakeisha Hogue, a UI senior from Champaign, at its annual MatSe Awards banquet today (April 14).
The award was created to honor the memory of Kevin Moore, a UI student who was killed in October 1998 at a party on the UI campus.
After graduation Moore had planned to return to Jamaica to work in engineering or material sciences. A scholarship was created with donations from the College of Engineering, the department of material sciences and friends of Moore. Each year, it is awarded to an outstanding minority in the department of material sciences.
The scholarship will provide $500 to Hogue toward her tuition. Moore’s sister and father will be at the banquet to present the award to Hogue and to receive a posthumous citation.
Hogue was chosen for her exemplary work and high grade-point average in material sciences and engineering classes. Hogue originally is from Austin, Texas, and came to the UI after studying at Parkland College. Although it is only her third year at the university, she already has enough credits to receive senior status.
