CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A new exhibition of drawings, paintings and collages will be on view Feb. 13 through March 14 at I space, the Chicago gallery of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“Sam Ainsley and Barbara Kendrick: Atlas of Encounters” will feature drawings and paintings by Ainsley, and collages and mixed-media drawings by Kendrick.
Until recently, Ainsley was the head of the master of fine arts program at the Glasgow School of Art. She currently serves as the school’s unofficial “international ambassador” and also teaches part-time in the painting department.
Kendrick is a professor emeritus in the School of Art and Design at Illinois.
According to Kendrick, she and Ainsley, who have exhibited together at the U. of I.’s Krannert Art Museum, are both concerned with “an emotional mapping” of the body.
“In both of our work there is a tension that arises from the ‘argument’ between abstraction and representation,” she said.
That argument will be advanced to another level in the exhibition, which will also feature a collaborative work by both artists.
An opening reception is planned from 5-7 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the gallery, 230 W. Superior St., Chicago.
I space gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
