Educational Technology Leadership Summit will be Dec. 9

The Educational Technology Leadership Summit will be from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 9 at the I Hotel and Conference Center. The summit will bring state educational leaders to the U. of I. to participate in a unique professional learning opportunity on educational technology.

The speakers will be Mary Kalantzis, the dean of the College of Education; Mark Henderson, U. of I. chief information officer; Wen-Hao Huang, a professor of education policy, organization and leadership; Maya Israel, a professor of special education; and representatives of Cisco Systems, a software company.

The event will motivate thinking and discussions about exploring and taking advantage of technology to help teachers to teach, students to learn and administrators to manage educational environments. The interactive format will provoke discussion, both practical and theoretical, and provide a glimpse of new technology systems offered by Cisco Systems. Presentations, discussions, activities and hands-on demonstrations will address technology integration, instructional strategies to enhance STEM learning (science, technology, engineering and math), the role of the Internet in education, mobility solutions and the classroom of the future. During the one-day summit participants will:

  • Learn about research-based instructional strategies to enhance student learning.
  • Connect and network with school district leaders across central and southern Illinois.
  • Understand strategies to manage technology integration.
  • Learn strategies to assess organizational climate and readiness for technology transformation.
  • Explore cutting-edge educational technologies designed to enhance connectivity and student learning.

Researchers develop a five-minute quality test for sustainable cement industry materials

A new test developed at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign can predict the performance of a new type of cementitious construction material in five minutes — a significant improvement over the current industry standard method, which takes seven or more days to complete. This development is poised to advance the use of next-generation resources called supplementary cementitious materials — or SCMs — by speeding up the quality-check process before leaving the production floor.
