Doctoral students receive inaugural survey research awards

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Two University of Illinois doctoral students will become the first recipients of new dissertation awards bestowed by the UI Survey Research Laboratory in memory of two longtime faculty members.

The Robert Ferber and Seymour Sudman Dissertation Awards will be given annually to UI doctoral candidates who achieve excellence in survey research as part of a dissertation. This year, recipients will each receive $2,400. An awards ceremony will be Wednesday (Feb. 27) at the Survey Research Laboratory office, 505 E. Green St., Suite 3, Champaign.

Fabio Fonti, a Ph.D. student in business administration, will receive the Robert Ferber Dissertation Award for his thesis on understanding organizational performance. Fontis dissertation is titled “When One Relationship Is Not Enough: Toward A Theory of Multiplex Embeddedness.” He is originally from Riccione, Italy.

Dating is not broken, but the trajectories of relationships have changed

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — According to some popular culture writers and online posts by discouraged singles lamenting their inability to find romantic partners, dating is “broken,” fractured by the social isolation created by technology, pandemic lockdowns and potential partners’ unrealistic expectations. Yet two studies of college students conducted a decade apart found that their ideas about […]

Researchers develop a five-minute quality test for sustainable cement industry materials

A new test developed at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign can predict the performance of a new type of cementitious construction material in five minutes — a significant improvement over the current industry standard method, which takes seven or more days to complete. This development is poised to advance the use of next-generation resources called supplementary cementitious materials — or SCMs — by speeding up the quality-check process before leaving the production floor.
