CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Disability Awareness Week takes place Sunday through Saturday (April 22-28), and the University of Illinois has scheduled a number of activities in recognition of the event:
Sunday (April 22), 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.: 23rd Annual Delta Sigma Omicron Wheel-a-thon, an annual charity fund-raiser. Participants collect pledges for the number of laps they push in a wheelchair around the Quad. To register or pledge, go to Room 136 Rehabilitation Education Center, 1207 S. Oak St., Champaign. Monday (April 23), 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.: Accessible Golf Education and Clinic, Just Fore Fun Golf Range, 301 E. Wilburheights, Champaign. Sponsored by Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital and Clinics and the U.S. Golf Association, the free clinic will provide individual and group instruction with an emphasis on adapted techniques to fit the needs of the disabled.
Monday, 6 to 7 p.m.: Tour Beckwith Hall, 201 E. John St., Champaign.
Monday, 7 to 9 p.m.: “My Left Foot,” the most acclaimed film of 1990, features Daniel Day-Lewis’ Academy Award-winning performance as Christy Brown, a man who triumphs over impossible odds to achieve greatness, Room 314B, Illini Union, 1401 W. Green St., Urbana.
Tuesday (April 24), 2:30 to 5 p.m.: Ice Sports Clinic, Ice Arena, 406 E. Armory Ave., Champaign. Come try the specially designed sleds for ice hockey, racing and skating, or bring your friends and put together a team for a game of broomball.
Tuesday, 6:30 to 8 p.m.: “Telemedicine: The Virtual Rehabilitation Clinic for Children in Iowa,” the 2001 Michael J. Ellis Distinguished Lecture on Disability Science and Practice, given by Dennis C. Tuesday, 7 to 9 p.m.: “Seeing the Unseen,” Room 209, Illini Union. Paraprofessionals from the Counseling Center will present a workshop on chronic pain and hidden disabilities.
Wednesday (April 25), noon to 2 p.m.: Tandem Bike and Handcycling Demonstration, Assembly Hall parking lot, southwest corner off Oak Street, Champaign. Experience cycling as a person with a visual impairment by riding a tandem bike.
Wednesday, 7 to 9 p.m.: “My Body, My Sickness, Our Secrets and Love,” and “This Fine Line,” presented by Inner Voices Social Issues Theater. 314B Illini Union. A discussion will follow.
Thursday (April 26), 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.: Air rifle demonstration, Division of Rehabilitation-Education Center, 1207 S. Oak St., Champaign. Test your concentration, steadiness and focus on the restored rifles.
Thursday, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.: Formal opening of the Disability Research Institute, South Research Park, Z Building, South First Street, Champaign. Funded by the Social Security Administration, the new institute is the first to provide disability-related research for SSA. The opening is preceded by the symposium “Partnership in a New Paradigm” from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information or to register, call 265-0279.
Friday (April 27). 4:30 to 7 p.m.: “Repairing the Damaged Spinal Cord: Doable Therapeutics,” Levis Faculty Center. John W.
