Deaths

Jules Rodger DeHaven Sr., 88, of Jacksonville, Florida, died March 3. He retired from the university as a locksmith.

Becky Frances Duffield, 53, of Thomasboro, Illinois, died April 7 at her home. Memorials: University of Chicago nursing staff, c/o Brian Duffield, P.O. Box 303, Thomasboro, IL 61878. She worked as the office manager in the analytical chemistry department.

Harriet McKean Fields, 90, of St. Petersburg, Florida, died March 29 at Signature Healthcare of Pinellas Park, Florida. She worked for the university as a computer programmer for 20 years.

Frederick Clyde Ford, 82, of Mahomet, Illinois, died March 29 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. He held a variety of positions at Illinois from 1961 to 1995, ending his career as an instrument technician II at Abbott Power Plant.

Iva Fern Galyath, 79, of Hidalgo, Illinois, died April 2 at home. She retired from housekeeping in Student Housing at the university.

Anna-Irmgard Haken, 87, of Champaign, died at home April 4. She taught mathematics at the university. Memorials: Champaign County Forest Preserve.

Thomas George Kovacs, 77, of Urbana, died March 20 at Siteman Cancer Center of Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He was a professor and later chairman of the art and design department. He retired in 1999, but continued to teach in the honors program. Memorials: Japan House or the National Audubon Society.

James Robert “Bob” Lodge, 91 of Tempe, Arizona, died March 28 at Friendship Village Health Care Center. He was a professor of dairy reproductive physiology and a pioneer of artificial insemination and embryo transfer techniques, retiring in 1991. Memorials: American Lung Association.

Lyle Curtis “Papaw” Smith, 94, of Tuscola, Illinois, died April 2. He retired as a storekeeper at the university.

Stuart F. Yoos Jr., 83, of St. Joseph, Illinois, died April 7 at Champaign-Urbana Regional Rehab in Savoy, Illinois. He retired from the university’s physics department in 1992. Memorials: St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, 905 S. Russell St., Champaign, or the St. Joseph-Stanton Fire Department.
