Deaths

Barton Marshall Clark, 77, of Champaign, died April 13 at home. He worked at the University Library for 26 years, including appointments as head of the Education and Social Science Library, head of departmental library services and the associate university librarian for planning and budget. He retired as a professor emeritus in 2003. Memorials: Carle Hospice Care Program, 611 W. Park St., Urbana, IL 61801.

Julia Ann “Julie” Dawson, 84, of Mahomet, Illinois, formerly of Mansfield, Illinois, died Aug. 3 at The Waterford at Bridle Brook, Mahomet. She retired from the university’s telecommunications department. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home in Farmer City, Illinois. A service will follow at 2 p.m. Memorials: Carle Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mary “Joan” Dawson, 73, of Bellaire, Michigan, died July 27 at her home. She was a professor of molecular and integrative physiology and served as the co-director of the Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Laboratory with her husband, Paul Lauterber. She retired in 2008. Memorials: Planned Parenthood, Union of Concerned Scientists, Doctors without Borders or Grass River Natural Area.

L. Thomas Fredrickson, 88, of Savoy, Illinois, died at home July 30. He was a composer and a professor emeritus at the university. At the time of his retirement, he had served as a professor of composition and theory with the School of Music from 1952-93 and was the director of the School of Music from 1970-74. He was the co-founder of the University of Illinois Contemporary Chamber Players. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at First United Methodist Church, 210 W. Church St., Champaign. A visitation and reception will follow the service. Memorials: The School of Music via the University of Illinois Foundation, P.O. Box 3429, Champaign, IL 61826.

Louine A. Friese, 89, of Urbana, formerly of Sidney, Illinois, died July 26 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. She worked as a secretary at the university.

Dorothy M. (Lee) “Meenah” Mapson, 75, of Champaign, died July 28. She worked for several years at the Illini Union and Lincoln Avenue Residence Hall.

Walter Emil Splittstoesser, 79, died Aug. 4 at Presence Covenant Medical Center in Urbana. He retired after 35 years from the university as a professor of plant physiology.  Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Road, Urbana. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Church, 708 West Main St., Urbana. Memorials: St. Patrick Education Fund, St. Patrick Church, 708 W. Main St., Urbana, IL, 61801.

Norma Jeanne Woolen, 93, of Champaign, died July 28 at her home. She retired from the University Library as a clerk-typist.
