Deaths

Amy M. Blue-Short, 48, of St. Joseph, Illinois, died June 6 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. She began working for the university in 2001 in the advance education department. Memorials: Court Appointed Special Advocates for childrenor to the St. Joseph-Ogden Softball Memorial. 

Joyce A. Butsch, 83, of Urbana, died June 2 at Meadowbrook Health Center in Urbana. She worked as a telephone operator at the university. A celebration of life is scheduled for Wednesday, June 19, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory, 1900 Philo Road, Urbana. Memorials: Champaign County Humane Society

Kenneth Morris Davidson, 83, of Urbana, died June 4 at Meadowbrook Health Center in Urbana. He worked at the university for 15 years. Memorials: Mattis Avenue Free Methodist Church, the American Heart Associationor Harbor Light Hospice.

Virginia Guthrie, 103, of Urbana, died Jan. 22 at Martin Health Center of Westminster Village, Bloomington, Illinois. She began teaching at the university in 1954, retiring as an emeritus associate professor of family and consumer economics in 1980. Services begin at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1203 W. Green St., Urbana, at 11 a.m. June 18. A visitation will be held an hour before the service. Memorials: Wesley United Methodist Church, the National Wildlife Federationor The Nature Conservancy

Jean M. Jessee, 78, of Pesotum, Illinois, died June 6 at her home. She worked at the university for 22 years in Building Services. Celebration of life services will be at 6 p.m. Friday, June 14, at Freese Funeral Home, 407 N. Bourne St., Tolono. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday.

Ralph A. Smith, 89, of Champaign, died June 9 at ARCH and Helia Healthcare of Champaign. He joined the university in 1964, retiring in 1996 as a professor emeritus of educational policy studies. Memorials:Hospice Hearts, P.O. Box 91, Thomasboro, IL 61878.

William Murphy Tilton, 94, died June 5 in West Columbia, South Carolina. He worked at the university. A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, June 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Lake House in Crystal Lake Park in Urbana. Memorials: a veterans’ group of the donor’s choice.

Harry C. Triandis, 92, died June 1 in Carlsbad, California. In 1958, he accepted a position with the university. He was named a University of Illinois Scholar in 1987 and professor emeritus of psychology in 1997. He established the Pola and Harry Triandis Fellowship in Cross-Cultural Psychology at the university. Memorials: Environmental Defense Fundor the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Sherry Marie Weaver, 62, of Urbana, died June 8 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. She worked for the university in the Natural History Survey and the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations. A celebration of life is scheduled for June 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. at her home, 2002 E. Curtis Road. Memorials: Prairie Rivers Network, 1605 S. State St., Suite 1, Champaign, IL 61820, and the University of Illinois Stanley B. Weaver Scholarship Fund, University of Illinois Foundation, P.O. Box 3429, Champaign, IL 61826-3429.

Jefferey “Jeff” Allen Welch, 64, died June 7 at the Hospice House in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. He worked as an adjunct instructor for the university’s Fire Service Institute. A traditional fire service memorial is scheduled at Real Life Ministries, 1860 N. Cecil Road, Building 1, Post Falls, Idaho, on Saturday, June 15, at 9:30 a.m. A celebration of his life will follow from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Services Training Facility, 5271 E. Seltice Way, Post Falls, Idaho. Memorials: Jeff Welch Memorial Fund, Mountain West Bank, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
