Deaths

Kathleen L. Hornaday, 90, of Tuscola, Illinois, formerly of Savoy, died March 23 at the Tuscola Health Care Center. She worked at the university’s Educational Placement Office for more than 40 years. Memorials: Tuscola First Christian Church or Tuscola Health Care Center Activity Fund.

Mary Katherine Newman, 67, of Champaign, died March 20 at home. She retired in 2007 after 30 years as a senior library specialist at the university. Memorials: Champaign County Humane Society.

Charles P. Slichter, 94, died Feb. 19 in Boulder, Colorado. He was a professor emeritus of physics and of chemistry at the university, serving as a faculty member for 57 years. He was a pioneer in the development and application of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to elucidate the structure and behavior of matter at the atomic scale, and a renowned expert on superconductivity. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, Urbana.
