Deaths

Clinton Frederick Fink, 85, of Lafayette, Indiana, died March 2 in Lafayette. He was a research associate at the Institute of Communications Research and the department of political science at the university. Memorials: Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Centeror Syracuse Cultural Workers, P.O. Box 6367, Syracuse, NY 13217.

John T. Scott, 91, of Champaign, died April 1 at University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1203 W. Green St., Urbana. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 6, at the church. He was a professor of production economics, farm management and statistics at Illinois for 30 years. Memorials: Wesley United Methodist Church and Foundation, 1203 W. Green St., Urbana, IL 61801; the UI Heart and Vascular Center Development Fund, One West Park Road, Iowa City, Iowa 52242.

Helen T. Smith, 92, of Urbana, died March 20 at OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center in Urbana. She worked for eight years at the Dean of Women’s Office at the university. Memorials: American Heart Association, American Cancer Societyor the National Stroke Council.

Al Ricco John Stasi, 57, of Champaign, died March 30. He was a building service worker for the university. A celebration of life will be held at Skateland in Savoy, Illinois, on Monday, April 9, from 5-7 p.m. Attendees may wear skates. Memorials: Roller Skating Foundation, 6905 Corporate Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46278.

New study finds deep ocean microbes already prepared to tackle climate change

Deep-sea waters are warming due to heat waves and climate change, and it could spell trouble for the oceans’ delicate chemical and biological balance. A new study demonstrates that the microbes may already be adapting well to warmer, nutrient-poor waters. Researchers predict that these surprisingly adaptable archaea will play an important role in reshaping ocean chemistry in a changing climate.
