Deaths

Richard Francis Earl Crang, 81, of La Grange Highlands, Illinois, died April 13 at his home. He was a professor of plant biology at the university. Memorials: Plant Biology Annual Fund in the department of plant biologyat Illinois or to the department of plant biology, 265 Morrill Hall, MC-116, 505 S. Goodwin Ave., Urbana, IL 61801.

Donald Earl Hiner, 92, of Gibson City, Illinois, died April 15 at OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center, Urbana. He was a farmer and a truck driver for the university. Memorials: Color guard unit, Lee Lowery American Legion Post 568.

Thomas E. Jean, 75, of Saybrook, Illinois, formerly of Farmer City, Illinois, died April 11. He retired from the university. Memorials: Carle Hospice.

Michael Earl Schlesinger, 75, of Champaign, died April 11 at his home. He was a professor of atmospheric science at the university for 29 years and the recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize through his work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Memorials: Animal House Shelter.

Leonard “Lennie” Dean Seward Sr., 80, of Pesotum, Illinois, died April 10 at C-U Rehabilitation Unit of Champaign Urbana Nursing and Rehab, Savoy, Illinois. He worked for the high energy physics department at the university for 23 years and also served as a football usher supervisor for many seasons. Memorials: Singing Men of GNN, Great News Radio, P.O. Box 550, Fisher, IL 61843-0550 or Meadowbrook Church, 1902 S. Duncan Road, Champaign, IL 61822.

Mary Sleator Temperley, 93, of Urbana, died at her home April 11. She became an instructor in the English department at the university in 1956, teaching courses in English as a second language. She was a member of the committee that planned the linguistic department, which was formally founded in 1965. Memorials: Crisis Nursery of Champaign County, the Salvation Armyand the American Association of University Women.

Cora L. Williams, 64, of Champaign, died April 7 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. She retired as a cook at the university.

New study finds deep ocean microbes already prepared to tackle climate change

Deep-sea waters are warming due to heat waves and climate change, and it could spell trouble for the oceans’ delicate chemical and biological balance. A new study demonstrates that the microbes may already be adapting well to warmer, nutrient-poor waters. Researchers predict that these surprisingly adaptable archaea will play an important role in reshaping ocean chemistry in a changing climate.
