Deaths

Stephen Mitchell, 61, died Nov. 4. He worked for the university as a specialist in the Hazardous Materials Training Program. A celebration of life service is scheduled for 1-6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Mason-White Funeral Home in Washington, Illinois. Memorials: University of Illinois Foundation to the Stephen A. Mitchell Memorial Scholarship.

Patsy R. Paye, 89, of Urbana, died Oct. 31 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. She worked for the university as a secretary in the department of African-American studies and at the School of Art and Design. Memorials: Carle Hospice

Alan Rankin, 57, of Monticello, Illinois, died Nov. 5 at his home. He worked for the university in the financial services department of Facilities and Services. A visitation is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 11, from 1-3 p.m. at Mackey-Wright Funeral Home, Monticello. From 3-5 p.m., there will be a short gathering at Three Ravens, 108 S. Charter St., Monticello. Memorials: Eastern Illinois Food Bank, 2405 N. Shore Drive, Urbana, IL 61802. 

Stanley James Rankin, 83, of Champaign, died Oct. 27 at Kirby Medical Center in Monticello, Illinois. He began working for the university in 1957 in the government contracts office. He subsequently worked at the university architect’s office, the Assembly Hall as a business manager, the physical plant as the director and the Computer Science Laboratory as a manager, retiring as the business manager of the computing sciences department. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Faith United Methodist Church in Champaign. A visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the church. Memorials: Monticello Railway Museumor the Japan House

Arthur J. Slates, 82, of Champaign, died Oct. 28 at OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center in Urbana. He retired after 27 years working as a police officer for the university.

Edward L. Young, 62, of Tolono, Illinois, died Nov. 6 at his home. He retired after working for the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at Illinois for 30 years. Graveside services will be at noon Saturday, Nov. 10, at Bailey Memorial Cemetery, Tolono. Memorials: Tolono Park District.
