Deaths

Edward J. Armbrust, 79, of Seymour, Illinois, died Jan. 15 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. He served as a professional scientist and entomologist at the university and the Illinois Natural History Survey from 1966 to 2000. From 1990-92, he served as the assistant center director and head of economic/agricultural entomology. From 1992-94, he was the center director and head of economic/agricultural entomology. From 1994-97, he served as the director of the Center for Economic Entomology. From 1997-2000, he was the acting chief of the INHS.

Paul P. Bernard, 89, died Jan. 9 at Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. He taught history at the university from 1968 until his retirement. Memorials: Masonic Village Hospice, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.

Richard “Don” Donald Brown, 92, of Urbana, died Jan. 13 at Amber Glen Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Urbana. He worked as an accountant for the university. Memorials: Alzheimer’s Association.

Charles “Chuck” D. Elmer, 89, of Champaign, died at his home Jan. 11. In 1955, he began his 34-year career as a physical therapist for the university at the Disability Resources and Educational Services Center. He was the supervisor of physical therapy services and taught kinesiology classes and driver’s education training to disabled students. He refereed wheelchair basketball and football games for many years. He also spent several decades supervising the ushers in the horseshoe at Memorial Stadium. Memorials: University of Illinois Foundation, 1305 W. Green St., Urbana, IL 61801.

Barbara Ann Phillips, 86, of Urbana, died Jan. 22 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. She worked as an accountant for University of Illinois Housing. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Road, Urbana, with burial to follow at Mount Olive Cemetery, Mayview, Illinois. Visitation will be one hour prior (10 to 11 a.m.) to the funeral at the funeral home. Memorials: Shriners Hospital for Children.

Marilyn G. Vizek, 83, of Champaign, died Jan. 8 in Virginia, Illinois. She worked at the university.
