Deaths

Werner Baer, 84, died March 31 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He was at the U. of I. for 42 years, serving until his death as a professor and director of the Master of Science in Policy Economics program in the department of economics.

Andrew Bendel, 68, died March 29 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He began working at the U. of I. in 1972 as an assistant broadcasting programmer with the campus radio station and was a senior library specialist with the Music Library from April 2000 until his death. Paul Wayne Dollins, 81, died March 30 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He was an investigation officer when he began working at the U. of I. police department in 1973 and later served as chief of police. Jerry D. “Squirrel” Exum, 63, died March 27 at his Champaign home. He began working at the U. of I. in 1968 as a kitchen laborer in Housing, where he later worked as a clerk I. From 1977 to 1990, he worked for the Operation and Maintenance Division, most recently as a steam distribution operator.

Betty June (Brooks) Smith Golladay, 94, died March 31 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. She began working at the U. of I. in 1951 as a clerk typist II with Stenographic Services, and held various clerical positions with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for more than 30 years, retiring in 1984 as an administrative clerk. Memorials: Honor the Chief Society.

Bill Hawn, 72, died March 30 at Presence Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. In 1965, he began working for the U. of I. as a kitchen laborer in Housing, and later became a building service worker at the Illini Union. Memorials: Harvest Church, 2118 Cindy Lynn St., Urbana IL 61802.

Donna Mae Menacher, 86, died April 2 at Meadowbrook Health Center at Clark-Lindsey, Urbana. She began her career at the U. of I. as an accounting clerk I in the Bursar’s Office, and later retired from the Business Affairs Grants and Contracts Office as an accountant I. Memorials: Flower fund at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 405 W. Clark St., Champaign, IL 61820; Shiloh Methodist Church, 352 County Road 2700 N, Mahomet, IL 61853; or the scholarship fund of the Illinois Heartland Decorative Artists.

A homegoing service for Paul Clifton Jr. will begin at 9 a.m. April 9 at Canaan Baptist Church, 402 W. Main St., Urbana. Clifton, 59, died March 27 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He began working at the U. of I. in 2007 and was an athletic facilities attendant with State Farm Center at the time of his death.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Gail Scherba will begin at 10 a.m. April 9 at Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy. Scherba, 64, died March 27. She was a 31-year employee of the College of Veterinary Medicine, serving most recently as a professor of veterinary virology and the leader of the virology section in the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Study shows new hope for commercially attractive lithium extraction from spent batteries

A new study shows that lithium — a critical element used in rechargeable batteries and susceptible to supply chain disruption — can be recovered from battery waste using an electrochemically driven recovery process.
