Deaths

Clifton G. Bergeron, 91, died April 14. He was a professor of ceramic engineering for 27 years, serving as the department head for the last 10 of those years. He retired in 1988 as professor emeritus. Memorials: Prairie Rivers Network or Clifton Bergeron Scholarship Fund in materials science and engineering at the U. of I.

Sally Kemp Dawson Buford, 77, died March 31 at the Oaks of Brevard, Brevard, North Carolina. She worked at the U. of I. for 34 years, retiring in 1999 as an admissions and records officer for Undergraduate Admissions. Memorials: Champaign County Humane Society.

Carl S. Coad, 90, died April 20 at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington, Illinois. He worked as a storekeeper for the department of chemistry in the School of Chemical Sciences for 31 years, retiring in 1979. Memorials: St. Matthew Catholic Church, Champaign.

Melbourne David “Pete” Eveland, 72, died April 20 at the Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana. He was a building service worker for Facilities and Services for 12 years, retiring in 2008.

William Hall Christie Maxwell, 80, died April 18 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He was a professor of civil and environmental engineering for 32 years. He retired in 1996 and became professor emeritus in 1997. Memorials: Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church Endowment Fund church gardens or the Alice Lloyd College, 100 Purpose Road, Pippa Passes, KY 41844.

Burr Nelson, 66, died April 16 at his home in Bement, Illinois. He was a research programmer in cell and structural biology and geography from 1972 to 1999. Memorials: Piatt County Animal Shelter, Monticello, Illinois, or Homeward Bound Pet Shelter, Decatur, Illinois.

Audrey Louise (Handley) Trees, 87, died April 20 at Colonial Manor, Danville, Illinois. She worked as a custodial supervisor for the Division of Operation and Maintenance (now Facilities and Services) for 19 years, retiring in 1991. Memorials: Vermilion Heights Christian Church Outreach Program.

Memorial Service

Funeral services for Kathryn Avery Cobb Burtness will be at 12:30 p.m. April 29 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 2200 Philo Road, Urbana. A visitation will be held before the funeral, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the church. The Rev. Bob Rasmus will officiate. Burial will take place at Roselawn Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Burtness, 90, died April 21. She was an academic adviser in elementary education at the U. of I. from 1974 to 1981.
