Joseph (Joe) William McGuire, 91, died Aug. 29 at his home in Aliso Viejo, California. He served as the dean of the College of Business from 1968-71.

Avis Marie (Kuhns) Bennett, 105, of Cisco, Illinois, died Aug. 31 at the Piatt County Nursing Home. She managed the kitchen staff at the Allerton Mansion. Memorials: Piatt County Nursing Home.

Mary Kay Simmons/Kappes, 59, of Champaign, died Aug. 29 in her home. She worked in the department of engineering for more than 20 years. Her last position was as an academic adviser. A celebration of life ceremony will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Meadowbrook Church, 1902 S. Duncan Road, Champaign. Memorials: Champaign County Humane Society.

Jan M. Lenz, 80, of Champaign, died Sept. 6 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. She was an assistant dean and assistant director in the Office of International Student Affairs, retiring in 2005. She was an active officer of the university’s International Hospitality Committee. A service celebrating her life will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 705 S. Main St., Tuscola, Illinois. A visitation will be held one hour before the service. The family requests that people attending the service wear St. Louis Cardinals or Fighting Illini attire.
