Dad’s Association recognizes outstanding student organization

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Dads Association at the University of Illinois presented its 2010 Certificate of Merit Award recipient for Outstanding Registered Student Organization to Chi Omega at the association’s annual banquet on Friday (Nov. 12).

The award recognizes outstanding contributions to the improvement of the university and the community.

Founded nationally in 1895, Chi Omega is the largest women’s fraternity. The Urbana chapter consistently scores high academically, with an overall grade-point average of 3.5 for spring 2010.

Since adopting the Make-A-Wish Foundation as the fraternity’s national philanthropy, the Urbana chapter is the largest donor to the foundation in the state, raising more than $35,000 to help grant the wishes of seven children in 2009-10.

The Urbana chapter was recognized this year at the Chi Omega national convention with the Award of Achievement; and at the spring 2010 Greek Oscars with first-place awards for outstanding chapter, president and philanthropy; excellence in risk management; and second-place for excellence in new-member programming.

The Dads Association, founded in 1922, is believed to be one of the nation’s longest-serving parent organizations. It supports programs, services and activities that promote the health, safety and well-being of the university community and serves as the parent liaison to campus.

Dating is not broken, but the trajectories of relationships have changed

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — According to some popular culture writers and online posts by discouraged singles lamenting their inability to find romantic partners, dating is “broken,” fractured by the social isolation created by technology, pandemic lockdowns and potential partners’ unrealistic expectations. Yet two studies of college students conducted a decade apart found that their ideas about […]

Researchers develop a five-minute quality test for sustainable cement industry materials

A new test developed at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign can predict the performance of a new type of cementitious construction material in five minutes — a significant improvement over the current industry standard method, which takes seven or more days to complete. This development is poised to advance the use of next-generation resources called supplementary cementitious materials — or SCMs — by speeding up the quality-check process before leaving the production floor.
