Culturally inspired painting exhibition to show in Illini Union

Judith Adanma Johnson premiered her exhibition “Energy” last week in the Illini Union Art Gallery. The exhibition will be on display in the gallery through Nov. 29. Located in the northwest wing of the Illini Union, the exhibition is free and open to the public.

Johnson has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Millikin University in art therapy and studio art, with an emphasis on drawing and painting. She has shown her work in galleries across the country.

Energy” is largely influenced and inspired by Johnson’s diverse background. She was born in Newfoundland to a white mother and a Nigerian father. She was raised by her mother and her Chamorro stepfather from Guam.

The audience can see the imprint African textiles have had on her work, while she also credits the raw energy of the moment to have inspired her. She incorporates music and dancing into her work process, resulting in the unique nature of her pieces.

Johnson’s website has more information.
