Cross-disciplinary initiative to conclude with roundtable discussion

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The one-year, 16-project Silicon, Carbon, Culture Initiative (SCCI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will formally conclude with a roundtable discussion Tuesday (Dec. 9).

The discussion, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, 405 N. Mathews Ave., Urbana. A reception will follow.

SCCI is a three-semester exploration of the interplay between the arts, humanities, sciences and technology fields. The campuswide initiative has provided support for performances, exhibitions, lecture series, conferences, virtual reality projects and innovative demonstrations that examine the recent past and chart a course for the future.

The roundtable will feature some of the project participants, who will discuss work done through the initiative and the promise that work holds for the years ahead.

Roundtable participants include Bertram Bruce, Graduate School of Library and Information Science; Richard Burkhardt, history; Noshir Contractor, speech communication; Guy Garnett, School of Music; Lillian Hoddeson, history; Sharon Irish, School of Architecture; Stephen Levinson, electrical and computer engineering; David O’Brien, art history; and Mike Ross, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.

SCCI is a joint initiative of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the College of Fine and Applied Arts, with support from the Madden Initiative in Technology, Arts, and Culture, and the offices of the chancellor and of the provost.

For more information, contact Christine Catanzarite, SCCI project coordinator, 217-244-7913.
